Oeste: Barcelona
Probably the most cosmopolitan city in Spain. It’s an old city with a lot of history, but very modern and lively.
There’s the Gothic neighborhood, “el barrio gótico”, with its small streets and surprisingly picturesque corners. There’s the city beach, “la Barceloneta”, and many other ones. There’s, of course, a huge variety of restaurants of any kind you can think of. Spain has 8 restaurants with 3 Michelin stars!
Art and design are present everywhere. Barcelona is a city of design and avant-garde, and many of the most famous designers are settled here. Also, many painters and artists have lived there: you have a museum for Picasso or Dalí, for example.
One of the most recognizable features of Barcelona is its modernist architecture, and its most representative artist was Gaudí. He was the creator of “Sagrada Familia”, the modernist cathedral that took more than 130 years to be built. And very exciting lines and curves can be seen in his houses: “Casa Millá”; “Casa Batlló” are the most famous ones.
Close stops: Valencia, Figares, Costa Brava.

Norte: San Sebastián / Donostia
The former is the Spanish name, the latter is the basque one. This is one of the three major cities in Euskadi, the Basque Country.
Everybody loves it. It is indeed very charming. You have a very nice city next to one of the best beaches of Spain, Playa de la Concha – in the middle of the city itself! You have of course a charming town center, “La parte vieja”, with its typical basque buildings. One of the most iconic attractions is “El Peine de los Vientos”, a very romantic sculpture in the cliffs. It’s meaning is “The comb of the Winds”.When you are there, you can see why.
San Sebastián also has the first Aquarium built in the country, and probably the second most important after Valencia. If you like hiking, you can walk up to Monte Urgull, in the other side of the bay.
They say the city has the highest quality of life in the whole country. It’s also a hot spot for gastronomy: here you’ll find the worldwide famous Restaurante Arzak, 3-Michelin stars awarded since 1989. And also proud of having 3 Michelin stars, Restaurante Aquelarre.

Centro: Madrid
History is omnipresent in Madrid. You can see the brilliant past of the Spanish Empire in its castles. The historic centre, also known as the “Madrid of Los Austrias” (in reference to the Hapsburg monarchs), and the spectacular Plaza Mayor square –inaugurated in 1620 and one of the most popular and typical sites in Spain– are a living example of the nascent splendour of the city in the 16th and 17th centuries. The jewel in the crown is the Royal Palace, an imposing building dating from the 17th century featuring a mixture of Baroque and classicist styles
Art and culture play a key role in Madrid’s cultural life. The capital has over 60 museums. The first in the list is always the Prado Museum, one of the world’s most important art galleries.
Apart from that, leisure is the king: Concerts, exhibitions, ballets, a select theatrical offering, the latest film releases, the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of the best Spanish and international gastronomy, to savour the charms of its bars and taverns… all these are just a few of the leisure options on offer in Madrid.
Madrid has extensive and beautifully maintained parks and gardens –like the Retiro park, formerly the recreational estate to the Spanish monarchs, the Casa de Campo and the Juan Carlos I park. It’s also a ver important European business hub.
These conditions, together with all the drive of a dynamic and open society –as well as high-spirited and friendly– have made this metropolis one of the great capitals of the Western world.
