Why Learning Spanish through Songs and Music Works
Have you noticed that the more you listen to a song, the more you like it? That’s because our brains are wired to look for patterns. After listening to a song for a couple of times, you’ll be able to unconsciously fill up the content, even if you don’t listen to the whole thing. Then, why not use that for language learning? After all, speaking a language is not more than combining a certain amount of sounds. After some repetitions, you’ll be able to predict what’s the next appropriate outcome.
The rhythm and melody of a song will help you remember automatically those new words you learnt.
Moreover, listening to music is fun! Singing along to Spanish music not only increases your vocabulary and knowledge of popular Spanish culture, but will allow you to even out your accent and grow acquainted with local slang.

Tips for Learning Spanish through Songs and Music
- Choose the right genre. Usually, slow romantic songs, like ballads, work the best. Also, repetitive rhythmic songs are easy to follow and they will make the words stick to your mind.
- Always use Lyrics. When you read “la letra” (lyrics) of a song, you’ll be not only learning new vocabulary, but joining together the sounds you hear in the song with the proper word. Next time you hear somebody use that word, you’ll recognize both the meaning and the spelling of that word.
- Repetition is key. It’s ok to just listen to the songs you don’t like just one time, as a language practice. But for the songs you do like, make them part of your daily life. Then you will give Spanish the space in your daily routine that it needs to grow in your mind.
- Sing along for pronunciation practice. You can take advantage of the professional diction of singers. My advice: listen to them first, and then sing along with them, paying attention to the differences. You can choose your favorite Spanish accent!
- Use the right tools. There are many options today. My favourite resources: Look for songs + lyrics on screen on Youtube. Or use apps like MusixMatch on Spotify for reading lyrics along the song.
